Diana Dean: Figures in the Landscape

The Pegasus Gallery of Canadian Art is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibit by the doyenne of Salt Spring Island artist’s, Diana Dean. Opening on Friday, July 27 ‘Figures in the Landscape’ will focus on an aspect of the artists’ work that many fans may not associate with her.

One of the Islands most regarded artist’s, Diana has lived here since 1982. Born in Rhodesia, she studied art in England, graduating with a distinction in sculpture from the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham. Arriving in Ottawa, Diana turned to painting, a medium which she has mastered.

When we think of Diana’s work, we think of the epic, classically inspired, allegorical paintings of highly stylized figures in the interior, families at the table, religious themed scenes or complexly composed and executed still lifes.

In this exhibit, the figure will still be prominent, but it will be in the context of the landscape. The grand west coast features, in which we all interact with, become almost personified. Whether it is a ballet of Arbutus and Douglas Fir reaching for the light, the oft repeated view of Mt. Maxwell or the rugged coastline.
