PETER MCFARLANE
Sculptor, mixed media and installation artist -- Peter McFarlane grew up in Montreal and was unusual in his dual passions for team sports and art. An avid hockey and rugby player, he was the only Varsity athlete enrolled in Fine Arts. He studied at Banff under scholarship and started his professional career in Toronto before moving to Salt Spring Island in the early 2000s.
He specializes in recycled materials transformed into art and has an incredible eye for shape and image. His whimsical approach to art and to life, results in innovative Scrapscapes and Circuit Board Art.
These form the base for exciting City-scapes. McFarlane capture the feel of freeways, electrical storms, remarkably detailed landscapes or the delightful herd of horses he calls Messengers – the story of communications from the Pony Express to the Internet.
McFarlane explains, What I do best is innovate, use materials that I haven’t seen used before and try to make [art] that I’ve never seen before. His sculptures, paintings and drawings are bold and graphic, often jarring, yet always thought provoking.
My intention is to put things together in a way that moves the senses and creates vivid, compelling, infectious imagery, he says. Following his first exhibition in 1992, Peter has found his quirky approach to art and his nudges to our collective eco-consciousness have won him a loyal following across Canada. He lives as he practices his art, equipping his home with finds from the recycle depot to function effectively and artistically as pot racks, stands, cabinets, and so on.
Garbage is simply a lack of imagination, Peter says, and his unique art speaks volumes for his imagination.
