George Turner waas born in Scotland in 1910 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1920. He initially went to St. Boniface in Winnipeg before the family settled in west Toronto. His father, George Sr., and grandfather, John Turner, were trained artists, the latter a professional portrait painter.

George obtained a BA and MA from the University of Toronto. He received his formal art training at OAC. He studied painting with other like-minded struggling Toronto artists in the 1930s and 1940s, having taken several painting expeditions throughout Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.

His early works showed European influence, but his later works adopted a more typically Canadian
