Born in Scotland in 1910, George Turner immigrated to Canada with
his family in 1920 and initially went to St. Boniface in Winnipeg before the family settled in west Toronto.
His father, George Sr., and grandfather,
John Turner, were trained artists. John was a portrait painter by profession.
George obtained a BA and MA from the University of Toronto. He received
his formal art training at OAC. He studied painting with other like-minded struggling Toronto artists in the 1930s and 40s, having gone on several painting
expeditions throughout Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
His early works showed European influence, but his later works adopted a more typically
Canadian 'Group of Seven' style. He painted in both watercolour and oils and produced a large number of linocut and woodblock prints.
Turner
taught Art and Drafting at various Toronto high schools including Central Technical School where he was department head and a colleague of Doris McCarthy.
George retired as Principal and would later serve as an administrator at George Brown College.
