Frederick Horseman Varley, was born in Sheffield, England in 1881. In his early years he studied art first in Sheffield and then in Belgium.

His friend, Arthur Lismer, encouraged Varley to move to Canada. In 1912 he moved his family to Ontario and began work at Grip Ltd. He was soon painting landscapes in Northern Ontario with Tom Thomson and various members of the influential Group of Seven.
