American landscape painter, b. Hartford, Conn., studied in Paris
under C. F. Daubigny and Jacquesson de la Chevreuse. Upon his return to the United States he became established as an artist and teacher in New York City. He
later taught at Smith for 38 years and donated to the college the art gallery that bears his name. He painted rosy, atmospheric landscapes. Large collections
of his work are at Smith and in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
Friend painter Gilbert Munger painted these Cazenovia, New York paintings with
him. They are of American scenes that are missing the moodiness and introspection of the Barbizon works and are structured with bolder shapes.
