Donald Smith was born in Brighton, England in 1917. At the age of 16, he left England for Canada with his mother and younger brother Gordon. The family settled in Winnipeg, where Smith attended high school, and then enrolled in the Winnipeg School of Art.
Donald Smith and his brother, Gordon, worked in the design department at Brigdens Limited, which at the time produced the artwork for Eatons mail order catalogue. Apart from providing an income, this part-time job afforded him the opportunity to work alongside some of Winnipeg’s most talented artists.
Smith is primarily known for his landscape paintings using soft colors and geometric shapes. He is a very competent artist although not prolific and therefore remains undervalued. His unique style of painting alwayss reflect a silent, fresh outlook.
