Daphne Odjig (Beavon), born 1919 on the Wikwemikong Reserve, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. She moved to British Columbia in 1968, but returned to the reserve to teach at the Manitou Arts summer workshops in the early 1970's. In the late 1960's, she founded a Native artists group that included Norval Morrisseau, who has been influential on all the Woodland painters. Winnipeg was, nonetheless, something of a watershed for Daphne. It was here, in 1973, that she co-founded the Professional Native Indian Artists Association (colloquially called the
