Takao Tanabe was born in British Colombia and studied in Europe, the U.S. and Japan. Following a decade as head of the art program and artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, he returned to B.C. in 1980. His work in in public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Glenbow Museum, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Tanabe is the recipient of several honorary degrees and of the Governor General's Award in the Visual and Media Arts.
