Reta Madeline Cowley (née Summers) was born in 1910 in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan. She studied painting at the University of Saskatchewan Summer Art School, at Emma Lake with A.F. Kenderdine in the late 1930s, and also at the Banff School of Fine Arts with W.J. Phillips during World War II. She also taught art for numerous summers at the University of Saskatchewan arts schools, counting Dorothy Knowles among her students.
Cowley boasted more than two dozen solo exhibitions of her work, while art collections across the country own her paintings. She was one of Canada’s finest watercolourists and is comparable to W.J. Phillips and David Milne.
