'Lady X' is the name we gave to this private Salt Spring Island artist who prefers to remain anonymous. What a delight it was to discover this gem of an artist who paints life with her heart on her sleeve. Each piece is a magical composition where people, animals and objects float Chagall-like across the canvas. Through subtle layers of colour and gesso, her dream-like images emerge with unexpected details. She paints events from her life with an honesty and passion that can only take place when an artist works without any intention of a public showing. The pieces explore a wide variety of subject matter; often female oriented themes such as motherhood, love, jealousy, companionship or social events such as cocktail parties. Her work is compelling because it is born from a lifetime of experience. These are authentic experiences which we identify as similiar to our own.
