John Livingston was born in 1951 on Vancouver, B.C. and moved to Victoria at an early age. Through a close friendship with the Hunt family, John began carving in 1961 at Thunderbird park, Royal B.C. Museum. Henry and Tony Hunt were head carvers at the museum at that time. After graduating from high school, John began a serious full time apprenticeship under Tony, Arts of the Raven Gallery was founded. The gallery was a major was a major force in Northwest Coast Native art for over twenty years. They organized international exhibitions and the gallery workshop trained many of the Kwagulth artist working today. John is a master wood carver and has worked on many large totem commissions with Tony and Calvin Hunt. More recently he has executed several large totems and other sculptures on his own. John works mainly in the medium of wood, but, is also and accomplished painter and has produced over fifty limited editions prints since the early 1970's. Through his close association with the Hunt family, John has participated in several large family potlatches and has been given the rights to a number of important Kwagulth dances. From in his home studio in Victoria, John continues to act as an agent dealing in high quality artifacts and contemporary Native art. He is also noted for his expertise in the restoration, replication and appraisal of artifacts and collections. His expanding versatility has led him to work on major projects with Haida, Salish and Nuu Chah Nulth artist.
