Gilbert was born in Alert Bay, British Colombia. He has apprenticed with his uncle John Lancaster, an excellent jewelry carver. He's also carved with well-known carvers Beau Dick and Joe Wilson. Gilbert is almost fluent in the language of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation and also takes part in many ceremonies and potlatches.
