Born in England, Gertrude Spurr Cutts studied art at the Scarborough School of Art, the Lambeth Art School, and with E.H. Holder in England, as well as in New York. She was an accomplished artist by the time she moved to Canada in 1891.
She married Toronto artist William Cutts in 1909. English and Welsh subjects appear in her work such as the the ruins of Tintern Abbey in The Vale of Tintern. Canadian places in Ontario such as Haliburton, Thorold and St. Catharines also appear frequently. She has been compared to the artist John Constable for her romantic and picturesque landscapes. She was an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
