Born in New York City, Elmer MacRae became a leading
member of the Cos Cob Art Colony, located in Greenwich, Connecticut, and centered around the Holley House. In 1900, he married the Holley's daughter,
Constant, and he frequently used his wife and young daughters as subjects in his paintings.
He was the treasurer and one of the organizers of the 1913
New York Armory Show where he exhibited 10 paintings and was one of the founders of The American Pastel Society and the Greenwich Society of
Artists.
Often mentioned in the same breath as Robert Reid, and Childe Hassam, these Connecticut shore painters pushed the conventional views of New
England impressionism.
