Born in Devonshire, England, he was mainly self-taught
although he had some lessons from M.J. Baird in London. He painted landscapes in watercolours in a simplified realistic style and exhibited at the Royal
Academy in London (1893-5) and at the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Engravers (1898). He was also an oil painter, and draughtsman. He
came to Canada in 1910 and settled at Seymour Arm, Shuswap Lake, B.C. There he painted landscapes especially of the Rocky Mountains. He also travelled to
Niagra and Nipigon, Ont.: Whitehorse, Yukon and throughout British Columbia. William Colgate referred to him in these words, "…in some respects the finest
colourist who ever worked in Canada. His principal market was in Great Britain…" He is represented in the NGC by a water colour, Departing Winter No. 9
which was purchased from the Carroll Gallery, Lond., Eng. in 1915. This painting reveals an oriental-like approach to his subject. He is also represented
in the Poole Fdn., Edmonton and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. He died in Seymour Arm at the age of 83.
